Go shopping with a list but be willing to change to accommodate any bargains you might find. Make a food menu for the week, planing in using left overs from the day before and plan meals that use firstly whats in your cub-board, when every-things gone your free anyway to choose your favourites, but writing a menu will also help you to eat a balanced diet cause you’ll see how much junk food your eating,,,,
and don’t buy too much unless its on offer,,, if something is on special offer then bulk buying allowed….
On another point, set up a special bank account for all the fixed amount bills and pay them from the new account that way one account should never be overdrawn and your bank charges will be for one debit (to the good account) instead of loads of little debits. This account may also pay interest, if so pay a little extra into it for emergencies rather than sinking into debt on credit cards or your standard account…

Barcelona:
The metro is very cheap but walking is definitely more fun, especialy Barrio Gotico.

More of the beaten path is Gracía, a nice (student)neighbourhood with narrow streets, shops and nice placas for some drinks (fe placa del sol)

Go to the market La Boqueria at the Rambas and have a tapa or two inside.
Cheap Xampagne/Cava (2 a 3 euro a bottle) you can get at can paixano; Carrer de la Reina Cristina, 7.

The best way to save money is take care of your wallet. I’ve never seen that many(attemps of) pickpocketing!

If you go with more then 4 people it could be cheaper to book an appartment at f.e. waytostay.com; rentthesun.com.

In Barcelona you should walk down the Ramblas, explore the Barri Gotic and visit the Gaudi buildings. take the tourist bus so you can hop on and off where you like and see things in detail, but you get a great overview of the city this way.

Also, there is the Picasso museum, and some great bars and restaurants.

Dont have your heating on when your not home that will save on gas.
turn tv’s and other electrical things off at the plug it’s suprising how much electric that saves.
dont do half wash loads of clothes wait until you have a full wash load
when doing your weekly shop have a look around different shops see if you can get things cheaper it all adds up at the end of the month

I’m not sure what you are saving for? Down Payment or mortgage payment. I wouldn’t use your 401k for a down payment.
When we were saving for our house we took it directly from our paychecks and put it into an account. We used a savings account but I’m sure there is something better for returns. You could talk to your bank to set up something. As for mortgage payments on a 30 year loan if you make just one extra payment a year it will pay off 8YEARS!! early. Even if you spread it out over the year. I try to make 2 extra payments a year plus extra on principle every month. Good luck in your new Home!

To save money limit your spending of it.
I prioritize my purchases carefully. If is toilet paper the 99 cent store makes better sense to me then the grocery stores which have higher prices. Those new light bulbs that save energy are $ 3+ at the market and maybe $ 1-$ 1.49 at the 99 cent stores.

In Barcelona, I recommend seeing the buildings by Gaudi which are spread out in the heart of the city, seeing “la sagrada familia” which is a cathedral by the same guy is a must! There is also a very nice large park (can’t remember the name of it right now, but if you look on a city map you will see it, on top of a hill). The old town is nice for little shops and having some tapas and a drink. I definitely recommend using the subway and walking a lot, it will be your cheapest bet! Have fun!
