The Concrete Producer and Concrete Construction magazines selected projects in eight categories for its Second Annual GreenSite Awards. The projects best exemplify the concrete production industry’s contribution to sustainable construction.

Among the projects chosen were a fine arts center in Illinois, an office tower in Toronto, Canada, a parking lot in Glendale, Ariz., a home to a science academy in San Francisco, a multi-use high-rise in Pittsburgh, and a residence in Wilmington, N.C. Many of the winners already have been certified as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) projects by the U.S. Green Building Council.

In their submissions, producers and contractors demonstrated how they help these projects’ owners and engineers qualify for the important designation by using a variety of sustainable construction methods and materials. For example, the winning projects used recycled materials such as fly ash, insulating concrete forms, pervious concrete, and regionally selected aggregate supplies.

“The 2009 GreenSite Projects of the Year demonstrate that the concrete production industry can be influential in sustainable construction in North America,” said Rick Yelton, editor in chief of The Concrete Producer, the leading publication for the concrete production industry. “The concrete industry is pleased to play a vital role in helping to construct these important projects that stand out as examples of how serious society takes its role in creating a sustainable environment for future generations.”

The winning projects will be featured in the November-December 2009 issue of The Concrete Producer and the November 2009 issue of Concrete Construction. GreenSite is a cooperative venture between the magazines and Hanley Wood’s World of Concrete trade show, which takes place Feb. 2-5 in Las Vegas.

The projects will be displayed at World of Concrete’s GreenSite Luncheon and Forum on Feb. 4. The event will highlight how concrete contractors have benefited from sustainable construction.

World of Concrete attendees will also have a chance to visit products, services, and technologies in a special GreenSite exhibit on the show floor.

In the last decade, the idea of ??building “green” has sprouted in the world – the so- called “green revolution”. Over the years, we could see the revolution gradually turning into one of these temporary trends established to support the marketing of construction related fields. Today, “green” the term is certainly misused and misunderstood by most of the empire of genius.

Actually, natural living systems on our planet are the models that we know who are triumphant in their sustainability as they relate to the environment in the process holistic, integrated, and reductive. On the contrary, many of the existing LEED rating systems as building are structured to support solutions that are mainly additive consumption and encourage conservation. This is simply because the rating systems are initially designed to keep certain items that meet the sustainability which are then packed with the technologies, systems and products to get there. Designers now rely heavily on these systems intelligent services to compensate for their negligence in the design of base-building. If buildings are based on a design process slow, it would obviously be stretched to use the so-called “Green” or “smart” engineering methods to supplement it.

It is unfortunate that the value of rating systems like LEED are converted into an accounting period architecture. This has completely deviated from what could be a healthy exercise by going out with a really good architecture. We’re missing an opportunity to develop such an architecture allowing accountants or statistical procedures to dominate our logical thinking and creativity. Targeting the maximum LEED points especially in the GCC countries require more common sense and understanding of the effect. The potential benefits of achieving a single certification should not be the motive of the design process.

Although installing efficient HVAC system would save an enormous amount of energy and add value to the environment on a massive scale, according to the LEED rating system – it is equal to the idea of ??having bike racks on campus education. The solution is here to make a careful study of all votes criticism that add higher value of the environment and make them mandatory. Then, the set of points that can be done by professionals in the credits low.

It is a fact that the development and construction of green buildings and sustainable cost more initially than a conventional building. It’s irrefutable. USGBC professionals, I suppose, are sufficiently trained to make such judgments and subjective decisions fluent . The manual LEED should be treated as a guide only.

Instead of judging the buildings LEED AP only on paper and electronic representations of media – regular visits to analyze the project sites, the inspection of materials and products should also be conducted. Clients and consultants to pay big bucks and spend the effort to implement LEED and fair analysis of a project by using simple materials submitted by courier or e-media, does not justify the whole system of USGBC to all. Decisions can be taken on the project sites through discussion with clients, design consultants and <-! NextPage -> contractors collectively. This is how innovative and fresh LEED may itself be evolving, rather than just being a socialite compiled data on which buildings are evaluated

Finally, manuals rating systems should not be used as encyclopedias of green and sustainable design. The architects and engineers must have extensive knowledge on the analysis of climatic data and geography, the study of levels of comfort rights, including passive design techniques, the judicious use of materials and resources and integrate services more efficient building. Those principles should guide our design process. Determine whether a building is classified as green or is not one of the smaller issues that we finally face the end of a project. A scoring system such as LEED, BREEAM, if necessary, can serve as a checklist or a useful means of returning alternatives to our evolving concepts.

The world needs green buildings a lot more green buildings need LEED certification. If certifications such as LEED, BREEAM continue to cost too much money time and effort – we will not stop building green projects, we’ll just stop certifying them

Don’t fall Victim To The Myths Of Going Green

Going Green has begotten a lot of recognition in the last few years.

Swimming through what is real and what is not can leave many people ill informed and I am annoyed of all of the misuses of the “Going Green Movement”.

Truthfully this misunderstanding is helping to consume unrenewable resources and even worse reducing jobs. The depressing part is it has been going on for decades.

There are many companies out there proclaiming that they are offering services in the name of going green when in reality they are just conserving their own money and even work that they should be paying others to do.

For example, your bank very likely has lured you into switching your account statements into emails instead of using the U.S. Postal Service. They profess that it saves trees and landfills by minimizing the use of paper.

If anyone was to take the time to think about this, they will find that the only thing it truly saves is money for the bank.

See paper is formed from a renewable resource, TREES!

Trees can be farmed and replanted. Pine trees grow rather fast and are produced on tree farms throughout our country. Paper can also be recycled, saving it from filling landfills.

The banks may not even realize this. They may have been sold on this fake “going green” idea also. I honestly doubt it, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

The truth is that they save money from not printing the statements, putting them in an envelope, and paying for postage to mail them.

Do you see the jobs that are suffering by them theoretically going green? Tree farms, paper mills, envelope makers, and the U.S. postal service is suffering from these banks trying to save a few pennies and covering it by claiming to be going green.

Another example that helps me focus this in to another true point is those little hand dryers in public restrooms. The little metal plate posted on them declares that those electric hand dryers are much better for the environment because they cut back on paper cost and landfill space.

Now I’m not going to go off on the absurb claims about saving paper again. No, now I am going to talk about the use of electricity.

Many power plants throughout the U.S. use coal to produce the power needed to run those little electric hand dryers. Can it really be “better” for the environment to pump the emissions out of a coal burning power plant to run these hand dryers. The crazy part is it doesn’t work on the first push of the botton anyway?

Is it really more fitting to use a non-renewable resource like coal instead of paper that can be produced from farmed trees?

I really can not believe the wool that is being pulled of everyones eyes. No, what those electric hand dryers do is save money for the persons who try to make you believe these things are better and they help keep those public bathrooms free of litter that someone has to clean up.

My final example is the one that chaps my hide the most and terrifies me of the future. This is the one that has been going on since the industrial revolution. Automated workers.

Automated workers… Those robots and computer programs that take up working class jobs for the sake of saving industries long term money. They save on wages and even retirement plans that the working class use to try to survive on.

Now before I go to town on a tangent about how the industries needed to focus on making jobs safer without firing the employees and putting in robots, I will move on and  save that thought for you the reader to ponder over.

Instead let me bring up the thought in you to think about the power needed to run these electrical robots and the amount of coal powered electric plants spread out across the United States.

Who are these electrical workers truly helping?

It’s not me or the other out of work Americans. No, it’s those top executives that think only of oneself, their money, and do not genuinely care about the people at the real heart of their business.

I think the American people need to have their eyes opened during these times of going green because if the truth is seen then this can be a beautiful, environmentally friendly movement.

Supporters of the Green Movement everywhere need to realize that when we as Americans say “No” to using our natural resources and still go about useing them, then the laws of supply and demand is going to make these resources cost more when we do get these resources. In the end we are sending a disturbing message across the world.

That concept is “We Save Our Resources So That We Can Deplete Yours”. This is really dismal and I do not like how it feels in my gut. We as Americans need to step back and stop thinking about the “Going Green Movement” as a way to save money and ponder what it really stands for, Saving The Environment.

Going green does not stand for making a new light bulb that cost less to energize or turning off the water when we brush our teeth. We can not waste water. Water will make it back into the water cycle. All of this is Just Saving Money! And Going Green definitely doesn’t mean saving money by no longer utilizing renewable resources, exactly the opposite in fact.

Going Green stands for discovering new alternative ways to power our lives with natural resources provided by our planet and the universe.

One way I am going to begin helping the environment is by researching alternative power sources to power some of the appliances inside my home.

I am discovering how to build my own solar panels for less than a hundred dollars and in the near future I am going to invest in setting up bladeless wind turbines that are now being presented in the United States.

A survey conducted on behalf of Green Mountain Coffee® shows what many of us would already suspect: Philadelphia is a coffee-crazed town. In fact, according to Green Mountain Coffee’s Fair Trade-Out Survey, more than 1 in 3 Philadelphians confess that they need coffee every day, and on average drink more than 2.6 cups of coffee per day. Almost 1 in 4 (26%) drinks four or more cups daily.

But even with all the coffee drinking in Philly it seems very few in the city know much about the coffee in their cup, including how to make it, where it comes from, and perhaps most importantly, how their choice of coffee can make an impact on communities around the world. Conducted in celebration of Fair Trade Month in October, The Fair Trade-Out Survey explores Philadelphia’s relationship with coffee and aims to educate coffee drinkers on the benefits of trading out their coffee for Fair Trade Certified™ varieties. Fair Trade provides a fair, minimum price to coffee farmers for their beans, resulting in higher quality coffee, and a higher quality of life in coffee-farming communities.

What would Philadelphians Trade Out for Their Coffee?

When faced with the choice of losing their daily cup of coffee, Philadelphia-area coffee drinkers would trade out most anything to keep it, including their car (21%), mobile phone (46%), and their pet (34%). What else would Philadelphians trade out to keep their coffee?


    Almost as many Philadelphians would opt to wear an Eli Manning jersey to an Eagles home game (38%) as would go to the Mummer’s Day Parade in shorts and a tee (37%).
    Start blasting “Eye of the Tiger” because 27% of Philadelphia-area residents would “absolutely” sprint up the Philadelphia Art Museum steps like Rocky.
    And talk about patriotism, 45% of Philadelphians would dress up in period clothing and ring the Liberty Bell every hour for one day before giving up their coffee.
    Overall, Philadelphia-based men would go to greater lengths to keep their coffee:
    So much for man’s best friend! Nearly twice as many men (37%) as women (21%) would trade out their pet before giving up their coffee.
    Baby, You Can Drive My Car: More men (38%) than women (21%) would trade out their car to keep their coffee.
    What would women do?: The one thing women would do more than men when it comes to keeping their coffee is volunteer at a non-profit for a month, with almost 4 of 5 women (79%) willing to volunteer vs. 62% of men.

Free Green Mountain Coffee for Philadelphians for Fair Trade Month in October

The Fair Trade-Out Survey is part of a campaign to encourage Philadelphia-area residents to trade out their usual cup of coffee for Green Mountain Coffee’s Fair Trade Certified blends.

“The Fair Trade-Out Survey is a fun way to remind people that coffee is more than just a part of a daily routine,” said Sandy Yusen, Director of Public Relations, GMCR Specialty Coffee Business Unit. “The choices we make about what’s in our cup have the power to improve the lives of coffee farmers and their families all over the world.”

Green Mountain Coffee’s guerilla sampling teams will be distributing free Fair Trade coffee samples throughout the city October 19th and 20th. The Fair Trade-Out Survey underscores the opportunity to promote better understanding of the benefits of Fair Trade. Currently, about only 1 in 7 (15%) Philadelphians regularly buy Fair Trade Certified products – that’s less than one-third of those who regularly buy local products (46%). The survey suggests that this may be due to lack of education on what Fair Trade means:

    More than 3 in 4 (76%) Philadelphians stated that they did not fully understand what Fair Trade means, and almost 2 in 5 (38%) admitted they had no idea. Even when given options, less than half (43%) could identify the definition of Fair Trade.
    However, after reading an explanation on the meaning of Fair Trade, 71% of Philadelphians were likely to purchase Fair Trade Certified products in the future.
    When it comes to paying a premium for Fair Trade products, 1 in 4 of those surveyed agreed that they would be willing to pay 5% to 10% more.

Philadelphia’s Coffee Culture

    There’s no such thing as an occasional coffee drinker: 75% of Philadelphia-area respondents drink coffee every day. Only 8% drink coffee less than 5 days per week.
    And when Philadelphians indulge, they really indulge: only about 1 in 5 respondents (22%) stop at one cup of coffee per day. In fact, 23% of Philadelphians drink four or more cups daily!
    Make mine black: 27% of respondents nationally take their coffee black, while only 19% of Philadelphians enjoy the brew in its purest form.
    Half and half is the most popular coffee lightener: 21% of respondents prefer half and half over flavored creamer (11%), whole milk (10%), and cream.
    Most popular place to drink coffee? An overwhelming 78% drink coffee at home, followed by the office at 13%.
    Philadelphians are sweet: Almost 7 in 10 (69%) men and women (68%) go for the sweet stuff.
